Preschool Class Schedule

Week of 9/17/12
Because Autumn begins in one week, I thought I would start the students thinking about what changes occur with the change in seasons. I will be reading the book There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves! by Lucile Colandro. We will be using activities found at http://www.3dinosaurs.com/printables/packs/fall.php using the Fall Tot Pack download. These activities include pre-writing practice, cutting practice, counting, folding, coloring, matching, and a puzzle.
I will be sending home a printable of the items the Old Lady Swallowed that I found at http://www.makinglearningfun.com/themepages/OldLadySwallowedSomeLeaves-FeltBoard.htm. See if your students can retell the order in which she swallows the items. The order is: leaves, shirt, pumpkin, pole, pants, rope and hay. Another at home activity you can do is a nature walk. By now some of the leaves have already started to fall and you can find many acorns on the ground. You can take a bag with you and put the leaves and acorns in the bag and then when you get home you can practice counting them. Please feel free to bring them in and we can use them to decorate our classroom.
With this activity, I will be focusing on The Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards for Pre-Kindergarten, that can be found at http://www.pakeys.org/pages/get.aspx?page=career_standards, specifically the standard 1.1.PK.D - Comprehension and Interpretation. This standard follows through to Kindergarten and says students shall be able to demonstrate listening comprehension/understanding before, during, and after reading through strategies such as answering questions, retelling, and connecting to prior knowledge. Students will demonstrate this at school and at home with the retelling of the story.
I support retelling stories because studies have shown that retelling is a way that teachers can assess student learning. By using explicit instruction, explaining why retelling is useful, modeling the procedure, giving students opportunities to practice, and providing feedback. Students' retellings should become more detailed as they become better readers. I believe that is will make students appreciate what their reading if they have a deeper understanding if of how it will benefit them.
