Summary: This book is a wonderful way for children to learn about the history of the African American people. It is told in a child friendly way and illustrated with pictures that will keep their attention throughout the story. Retelling the history of the African American people is the essence of this book.
Personal response: After taking college level history classes, I felt this book was told in a child friendly way that almost anyone would still learn new information from. The illustrations are drawn in such a way they almost look like photographs.
This book reminds us of the contributions that African Americans made to our country.
Classroom connections: After having a brief introduction to African American History, I would read this book to the students. Using the timeline, I would show students that it gives some information over hundreds of years. I would then show the students the video at http://www.amazon.com/Heart-Soul-America-African-Americans/dp/0061730742. This would give them a sense of how the author wrote the book and then illustrated it. I would then have students write a brief biography of an African American that we would present in class.
