Summary: Catherine feels that people are always looking at her and maybe even making fun of her because of her brother David. David has autism and she tries to create "Rules" for David to abide by so he does not embarrass her. Does Catherine know that maybe the people she thinks are staring at David are really staring at her?
Personal response: This became on of my favorite books after reading it. I love how the author takes a subject like Autism and makes it into something that people don't have to be afraid to talk about. It is such a realistic topic that many people have to deal with on a daily basis. I especially love that when I would recommend this book to students, they would come back saying that it was one of their favorite books also.
Classroom connections: Before reading, I would ask the class what they thought a book titled Rules, was about. After discussing this, I would read the book to them over the course of a few days making a list of words that the students do not understand. Using the study guide found at www.cynthialord.com/pdf/rules_discuss.pdf I would show students the flow chart and glossary for terms they did not understand.
