Summary: Django Reinhardt was one of the worlds most accomplished guitarists. Growing up in a gypsy encampment, he quickly became an acclaimed jazz guitarist. He went to Paris to follow his dream of playing in a big band when tragedy struck and his hand he used to fret guitar was badly burned. How would he ever play again?
Personal response: This books shows how tragedy cannot stop someone from accomplishing their dreams. Such an inspirational story that I will definitely read to my students. The illustrations show so much detail that they are worth spending time just looking at.
Classroom connections: I would use this book to start a lesson on biographies. I would have students pick a person of interest to them and have them come up with 5 facts about them and 1 thing that they feel the rest of the class would not know about that person. I would have the students write these facts in paragraph form and share with the class.
